Darjeeling sits at 2,000 metres on a ridge in West Bengal, looking north to Kanchenjunga, at 8,586 metres the third highest mountain on earth, and close enough on a clear morning to seem improbable.
The town grew around tea in the nineteenth century, and the gardens still shape the landscape. But its culture is Himalayan rather than Bengali: Tibetan, Nepali and Lepcha communities have made it one of the more layered places in the eastern Himalaya.
For the tea, understood properly, first flush in spring, second flush in summer, and the difference between an estate and a brand. For the monasteries: Ghoom, Bhutia Busty and the Tibetan refugee self-help centre established in 1959. And for the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site still running steam on a two-foot gauge.
Darjeeling holds a Tibetan Buddhist community formed largely after 1959, alongside long-established Nepali and Lepcha populations. Nepali is the common language. It connects naturally with Sikkim to the north, which is the obvious next step for this region.
Ceded to the British East India Company in 1835 and developed as a hill station and tea district. The railway opened in 1881. After 1959 it became a significant centre of the Tibetan exile community, which reshaped its religious and cultural life.
March to May for the first flush and rhododendron, October to November for the clearest Kanchenjunga views. The monsoon from June to September is heavy and landslides can close roads.
Bagdogra is the nearest airport, around three hours by road below. New Jalpaiguri is the rail head, and the connection point for the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway.
Darjeeling is in India and an Indian visa applies; most nationalities can use the e-Visa system. Onward travel into Sikkim requires an additional Inner Line Permit, which we arrange.
Darjeeling combines naturally with Sikkim and with Bhutan via the Phuentsholing land border, which makes it a strong second leg rather than a standalone journey for most travellers.
