Chele La Trek
An active route through Bhutan’s alpine meadows, forest trails and highland Himalayan scenery.
Overview
Bhutan offers some of the most beautiful and least-crowded trekking in Asia. The Chele La region — crossing the highest motorable pass in Bhutan and descending into the hidden Haa Valley — combines dramatic alpine scenery with cultural depth. This ten-day itinerary pairs guided trekking with visits to Paro’s sacred sites and finishes with Tiger’s Nest.
The trekking sections are graded moderate — suitable for anyone with reasonable fitness who enjoys walking. No technical climbing is required. Your trekking guide is experienced in the region and carries a full first-aid kit.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1Arrival in Paro · Trekking Briefing+
Land at Paro on the dramatic Himalayan approach and meet your guide and trekking team. Afternoon is a gentle orientation walk through Paro valley — partly to see the landscape, partly to begin acclimatising to Bhutan’s altitude (Paro sits at 2,200m).
Evening trekking briefing: your guide walks through the route, daily distances, altitude profile, gear recommendations and weather expectations. Preparation and rest. Overnight: Paro
Day 2Paro · Cultural Acclimatisation Day+
A walking acclimatisation day through Paro’s cultural sites. Visit Rinpung Dzong, the fortress-monastery above the river. Walk up to the National Museum. Afternoon visit to Kyichu Lhakhang — one of Bhutan’s oldest temples, set in a courtyard of orange trees and birdsong.
The day’s walking is light but purposeful — your body is adjusting to altitude while your mind settles into Bhutan’s pace. Overnight: Paro
Day 3Chele La Pass · Trek Begins+
Drive to the Chele La Pass trailhead (3,988m) — the highest motorable pass in Bhutan. The air at the summit is thin and cold; prayer flags in every direction; views to peaks over 7,000 metres. This is the starting point of the trek proper.
Begin trekking along the ridge — south-facing slopes of rhododendron (blazing in spring) and north-facing slopes of dense fir forest. The trail is clear and well-marked, with views opening and closing as the ridge contours. Camp or lodge at the first overnight point. Overnight: Camp / Trail lodge
Day 4Ridge Walking · Alpine Meadows+
A full trekking day on the high ridge. The trail traverses through open alpine meadow — the vegetation low, the sky enormous, the silence complete. In spring, the ground is carpeted with primulas, gentians and mountain asters. In autumn, the same meadows glow gold.
Occasional views to both sides of the ridge: Paro valley to the south, the Haa district to the north. On clear days, the Himalayan main range fills the northern horizon. Overnight: Camp / Trail lodge
Day 5Highest Point · Panoramic Views+
The highest and most dramatic day of the trek. The trail climbs to exposed ridgelines with unobstructed views of the Bhutanese Himalayas — Jhomalhari (7,326m), Jichu Drake and the range stretching east. On a clear morning, the scale and beauty are extraordinary.
Careful navigation on this section — your guide knows the route well. The descent into sheltered camp is through dense rhododendron forest, arriving in late afternoon. Overnight: Camp / Trail lodge
Day 6Chele La Region · Highland Camp+
A varied day combining ridge sections, forest descents and views into the Haa Valley below. The trail enters the Haa-side landscape — quieter, more sheltered, the vegetation denser. Encounter yak herders moving their animals between highland pastures and winter valleys.
Camp in a meadow with evening views and, with clear skies, a night sky that makes the altitude entirely worthwhile. Overnight: Camp
Day 7Descent to Haa Valley · Rest Day+
Final descent into the Haa Valley — a transition from exposed trekking terrain to the quiet valley with its ancient temples and traditional farmhouses. Visit Lhakhang Kharpo (the White Temple) and explore Haa town, one of Bhutan’s smallest and most peaceful district centres.
Rest, recover, hot shower. Your guide arranges a traditional Bhutanese dinner. Overnight: Haa (guesthouse)
Day 8Return to Paro · Recovery Day+
Return to Paro over or around Chele La — by this stage the pass feels familiar. A recovery day in Paro: rest, gentle walks, good food. Some guests choose a spa or massage; others browse the craft shops or simply sit with a book and watch the valley.
Briefing for the final two days ahead. Overnight: Paro
Day 9Tiger’s Nest Monastery+
After eight days of walking, the hike to Tiger’s Nest feels familiar and earned. Start early in the cool forest. The monastery appears suddenly around a cliff edge — four temples built in the 8th century, clinging to a 900-metre sheer rock face above the valley floor.
Inside: butter lamps, ancient statues, the sound of monks chanting, the smell of pine and incense. One of the world’s great buildings and a profoundly moving place to end a trekking journey. Lunch in Paro with your guide and team. Overnight: Paro
Day 10Departure+
Final morning in Paro. Your guide accompanies you to the airport. The departure flight lifts out of the valley and climbs above the Himalayan ridges — prayer flags visible on the high passes below. Bhutan shrinks and disappears. Departure: Paro International Airport

Day 1: Arrival in Paro – A Magical Welcome to Bhutan
Flying into Bhutan is an unforgettable experience and the perfect introduction to a country known for its breathtaking landscapes, vibrant culture, and deep spiritual heritage. As your flight descends into Paro Valley, you will be greeted by sweeping views of the Himalayas, including majestic peaks such as Mt. Everest, Mt. Kanchenjunga, Mt. Jomolhari, and Mt. Jichu Drakey. The approach to Paro Airport is often described as one of the most scenic in the world.
Upon arrival, you will be warmly welcomed by your guide and escorted to your hotel for check-in and refreshments.
After lunch, begin your Bhutanese journey with a visit to Paro Dzong (Rinpung Dzong), one of Bhutan’s most iconic fortress-monasteries. Serving as both an administrative center and a monastic institution, the Dzong is admired for its remarkable architecture, serene courtyards, and panoramic views over the Paro Valley and Paro River.
Next, visit the National Museum of Bhutan (Ta Dzong), housed in a historic watchtower above the Dzong. The museum’s rich collection of art, artifacts, textiles, and historical exhibits provides an insightful introduction to Bhutan’s cultural and spiritual heritage.
Overnight at hotel in Paro.
Day 2: Hike to Taktsang (Tiger’s Nest Monastery)
After breakfast, begin your journey to one of Bhutan’s most iconic and sacred sites — Taktsang Monastery, widely known as Tiger’s Nest. Perched dramatically on a cliff at 3,120 meters (10,240 ft) above the Paro Valley, this legendary monastery is considered one of Bhutan’s most revered spiritual destinations and an architectural marvel.
According to Bhutanese lore, the Indian saint Guru Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche) flew to this cliffside cave on the back of a tigress in the 8th century to subdue negative forces and spread Buddhism throughout Bhutan. Today, Taktsang stands as a symbol of faith, resilience, and devotion.
The hike takes approximately 5 hours (round trip) and follows a beautiful ancient trail lined with fluttering prayer flags and traditional prayer wheels powered by the river. Along the way, you’ll enjoy stunning views of pine forests, dramatic cliffs, and the monastery itself appearing like a jewel against the mountainside.
After descending, spend the evening strolling through Paro’s vibrant local market, where you can explore traditional handicrafts, handwoven textiles, local snacks, and daily Bhutanese life. This is a wonderful opportunity to interact with locals and experience Bhutan’s authentic culture.
Day 3: Paro → Chonana
Altitude: 3,500 m
Distance: 14 km
Trekking Time: 5–6 hours
Your journey today begins from the charming Paro Valley and leads you gradually into the quieter, more remote landscapes of Bhutan. Leaving behind the cultural landmarks and peaceful town life, the trail ascends through forested hillsides, weaving through blue pine, oaks, and rhododendron forests alive with birdsong.
The path from Paro to Chonana is a rewarding trek, offering a rich blend of nature and local village encounters. As you climb higher, you’ll enjoy beautiful views of the valley opening behind you — terraced farmlands, winding rivers, and scattered traditional Bhutanese homes. The trail can be a mix of gentle slopes, steady ascents, and occasional uneven terrain, typical of Bhutan’s mountain paths.
Along the way, you’ll pass through small hamlets where you can observe daily rural life, traditional farmhouses, and the simplicity of Bhutanese mountain culture. The higher you climb, the more peaceful and pristine the surroundings become, making this trek an ideal introduction to Bhutan’s wilderness.
By late afternoon, you will reach Chonana, a serene high-altitude campsite surrounded by forested ridges and fresh mountain air. Enjoy the tranquility of nature as you settle into your campsite and take in views of the surrounding hills and valleys.
Overnight at campsite in Chonana.
Day 4: Chonana → Jebkarpo
Altitude: 3,500 m
Distance: 16 km
Trekking Time: 6–7 hours
Today’s journey takes you deeper into Bhutan’s highlands as you trek from Chonana toward the alpine ridges of Jebkarpo. The trail begins with a gradual ascent through cool, dense forests of oak, pine, and rhododendron, gradually opening into expansive alpine meadows filled with wildflowers during spring and summer.
As you climb higher, the landscape shifts dramatically — forests give way to high-altitude pastures, sweeping hillsides, and panoramic mountain views. The trail can be demanding due to the elevation and steady incline, but every step is rewarded with spectacular scenery and the sense of entering truly remote Himalayan wilderness.
Along the route, watch for local wildlife such as mountain birds, grazing yaks, and rare alpine flora. The open ridges offer breathtaking vistas of the surrounding valleys and snow-capped peaks, making this one of the most scenic sections of the trek.
By the time you reach Jebkarpo, you’ll find yourself surrounded by serene high-altitude landscapes, clear mountain air, and peaceful silence. This campsite serves as a perfect resting point before continuing deeper into the trek.
Overnight at campsite in Jebkarpo.
Day 5: Jebkarpo → Milungla
Altitude: 3,500 m
Distance: 16 km
Trekking Time: 5–6 hours**
Today’s trek takes you across some of the most breathtaking high-altitude terrain in western Bhutan. Leaving Jebkarpo, the trail continues along open ridgelines and rolling alpine meadows, offering uninterrupted views of Bhutan’s sacred Himalayan giants.
As you make your way toward Milungla, you’ll be treated to magnificent vistas of Mt. Jomolhari, revered as the abode of the mountain goddess Aum Jomo, as well as the shimmering Tsering Gang (“The Glacier of Long Life”) and the elegant peak of Jichu Drakey. These dramatic snow-capped mountains form a spectacular backdrop throughout much of the day.
The trekking path gently alternates between ascents and descents, crossing rocky sections, grasslands, and high-altitude plateaus. Depending on the season, certain areas may still hold patches of snow, adding to the sense of adventure and Himalayan charm. The landscape here feels vast, open, and incredibly peaceful — perfect for photography and quiet reflection.
Upon reaching Milungla, you’ll find yourself surrounded by rugged cliffs, sweeping valleys, and the serene silence of the mountains. This remote campsite offers a truly immersive highland experience, far removed from the modern world.
Overnight at campsite in Milungla.
Day 6: Milungla → Tong
Altitude: 3,500 m
Distance: 16 km
Trekking Time: 5–6 hours**
Today’s trek takes you from the high, open landscapes of Milungla down into greener and more temperate environments. As you begin your descent, the scenery gradually shifts from rugged alpine terrain to lush forested slopes, offering a beautiful contrast to the high-altitude meadows encountered earlier in the trek.
The trail winds through alpine pastures, rocky pathways, and stretches of rhododendron and blue pine forest. Depending on the season, you may still see traces of snow higher up before the environment opens into softer, greener landscapes. The changing vegetation and terrain make this one of the most varied and visually rewarding sections of the journey.
As you approach Tong, the valley widens and the surroundings become richer with life. Keep an eye out for Himalayan yaks, grazing peacefully along the slopes—an iconic sight of Bhutan’s highlands. Tong itself is typically a quiet campsite or a small village, offering a tranquil resting point surrounded by forested hills and fresh mountain air.
Here, you’ll experience a gentler side of the Himalayas—still remote and pristine, but warmer, greener, and deeply peaceful.
Overnight at campsite in Tong.
Day 7: Tong → Thimphu
Today marks your transition from the quiet, remote highlands of Tong to the vibrant cultural and administrative heart of Bhutan — Thimphu, the capital city. This day offers a beautiful blend of trekking and scenic driving, allowing you to experience the dramatic shift from rugged mountain landscapes to the gentler valleys below.
The route begins with your descent from Tong’s high-altitude environment, moving through forests, pastures, and sweeping views of the surrounding hills. As you move lower, the air becomes warmer and the landscape grows greener, revealing terraced farmlands, villages, and forested ridges.
Your drive toward Thimphu follows a mix of paved and unpaved mountain roads, characteristic of Bhutan’s breathtaking yet winding Himalayan terrain. Along the way, enjoy panoramic views of lush valleys, cascading rivers, and distant peaks. The journey showcases the country’s rich natural diversity — from alpine wilderness to the more temperate climates of western Bhutan.
As you arrive in Thimphu, you’ll notice the contrast between remote trekking days and the lively atmosphere of Bhutan’s capital. Despite being the largest city, Thimphu remains peaceful, traditional, and beautifully nestled in a deep valley surrounded by forested mountains.
Overnight at hotel in Thimphu.
Day 8: Thimphu → Wangdue Phodrang (via Dochula Pass)
Begin your morning with a visit to Tashichho Dzong, one of Bhutan’s most important religious and administrative landmarks. This impressive fortress-monastery serves as the summer residence of Bhutan’s central monastic body and houses key government offices, including the throne room of His Majesty the King. With its grand courtyards, manicured gardens, and striking traditional architecture, Tashichho Dzong offers an excellent introduction to Bhutanese governance and spirituality.
After your visit, depart Thimphu and begin your scenic drive toward Wangdue Phodrang. The journey takes you across the famous Dochula Pass (3,100 m), one of the most beautiful viewpoints in Bhutan. Here, you’ll stop to admire the 108 Druk Wangyal Chortens, built in honor of Bhutanese soldiers, and enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the eastern Himalayas on clear days.
From Dochula, continue descending into the warmer valleys of Punakha and Wangdue Phodrang. The landscape gradually transforms from high mountain forests to lush fields, riverside terraces, and traditional villages, offering a perfect window into Bhutanese rural life.
Upon arrival, explore Wangdue Phodrang Dzong from the outside — a historic fortress that, despite suffering fire damage in 2012, remains one of Bhutan’s most culturally significant sites. The town itself is known for its craftsmanship, traditional architecture, and insight into daily Bhutanese life.
Overnight at hotel in Wangdue Phodrang or Punakha.
Day 9: Wangdue Phodrang → Paro (via Punakha)
Begin your morning with a peaceful walk to Chimi Lhakhang, one of Bhutan’s most beloved and spiritually significant temples. The journey starts with a 20-minute stroll through Sopsokha Village, passing traditional farmhouses, lush rice fields, and scenic countryside views. This serene walk provides an intimate glimpse into rural Bhutanese life.
Chimi Lhakhang was built in 1499 by the revered Lama Drukpa Kinley — affectionately known as the Divine Madman for his unconventional, humorous, and enlightened teachings. The temple is widely known as the Fertility Temple, attracting couples from Bhutan and around the world seeking blessings for children. Its peaceful setting and unique cultural symbolism make it a memorable highlight of your journey.
Afterward, enjoy a traditional Bhutanese lunch in a local farmhouse, offering authentic flavors and warm hospitality.
Continue your drive to Punakha Dzong, one of Bhutan’s most magnificent and historically important fortresses. Built in 1637 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, the founder of Bhutan, the Dzong sits majestically at the confluence of the Pho Chhu (Father River) and Mo Chhu (Mother River). With its grand architecture, sacred relics, and sweeping riverside views, Punakha Dzong remains a powerful symbol of Bhutanese culture and spiritual heritage.
Following your visit, begin your scenic return drive to Paro, passing through valleys, forests, and mountain passes that beautifully capture the essence of Bhutan’s diverse landscapes. This final leg of the drive is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on your journey through the heart of the Himalayas.
Overnight at hotel in Paro.
Day 10: Departure from Paro
After breakfast, your guide will accompany you to Paro International Airport and assist with your departure. As you leave the Land of the Thunder Dragon, take a moment to reflect on the mountains, monasteries, and meaningful moments that made your journey special.
