DAY 1. Arrive at Paro International Airport and Transfer to Thimphu

Your journey begins with an unforgettable flight skimming over the mighty Himalayas. As you soar past Mount Everest, Kanchenjunga, and the sacred peaks of Jomolhari and Jichu Drake, the excitement builds—especially as you prepare for the famous landing at Paro, one of the world’s most thrilling airports.

Upon arrival, you’ll be warmly greeted by our representatives and driven through peaceful valleys to Thimphu, Bhutan’s charming capital, just an hour away.

After checking into your hotel and taking a short rest, your Bhutan adventure gently unfolds. In the evening, you’ll visit the National Memorial Chorten, a beautiful stupa built in honor of the Third King, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck. Here, you can join local devotees as they walk clockwise around the chorten, spinning prayer wheels and soaking in the atmosphere of devotion and peace.

Next, step into the General Post Office, a delightful stop for anyone who loves stamps and souvenirs. Bhutan is known for its exquisite stamps depicting wildlife, festivals, and traditional art—perfect keepsakes to take home.

As the sun begins to set, enjoy a relaxed stroll through the Craft Bazaar, where local artisans display handmade treasures—vibrant textiles, jewelry, pottery, paintings, and unique crafts that reflect Bhutan’s rich cultural soul.

DAY 2. Thimphu Sightseeing and Drive to Punakha

After a hearty breakfast, you’ll drive just outside Thimphu to the Buddha Dordenma Statue, towering 169 feet above the valley. Completed in 2015, this magnificent statue was built under the guidance of His Majesty the 4th King, Jigme Singye Wangchuck, to promote peace and happiness. From Buddha Point, enjoy panoramic views of the Thimphu valley and explore the peaceful temple complex surrounding the statue.

Next, continue your scenic journey to Punakha, passing through Bhutan’s stunning mountainous landscapes. On the way, stop at Dochula Pass (3,100 meters), a breathtaking viewpoint where, on clear days, you can see the eastern Himalayas stretch across the horizon. Take a moment to admire the 108 chortens and the peaceful Druk Wangyal Lhakhang temple.

After soaking in the views, drive onwards to Punakha, and visit the famous Chimi Lhakhang, the Fertility Temple. Known for its connection to Drukpa Kunley, the “Divine Madman,” the temple is reached by a pleasant walk through picturesque rice fields. You’ll find a few charming local eateries along the way, perfect for stopping for a meal.

In the afternoon, visit Punakha Dzong, a stunning fortress built in 1637 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal. This ancient capital of Bhutan is one of the most impressive dzongs in the country, with intricate woodwork and a strategic location at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers.

Finish your day with a visit to the Punakha Suspension Bridge, a thrilling bridge that spans the Pho Chhu River, offering sweeping views of the lush valley below. It’s a perfect spot for some unforgettable photos.

DAY 3.  Punakha to Paro

After breakfast, embark on a scenic hike to Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten, a beautiful monument built in 2004 by Her Majesty the Queen Mother, Ashi Tshering Yangdon Wangchuck. The hike, through lush rice paddies and up the hillside, is moderate but incredibly rewarding, offering both spiritual serenity and breathtaking views of Bhutan’s natural beauty.

Once back from your hike, continue your journey to Paro, where you’ll visit the majestic Paro Dzong (Rinpung Dzong). This fortress-monastery, perched above the valley, is a masterpiece of Bhutanese architecture, with intricate woodwork and vibrant paintings decorating its walls.

Just above the dzong, head to the National Museum of Bhutan (Ta Dzong), which houses an impressive collection of Bhutanese art, ancient relics, religious thangkas (scroll paintings), and fascinating historical artifacts, offering a deeper insight into the country’s rich heritage.

End your day with a peaceful overnight stay at the hotel, reflecting on the day’s incredible sights and experiences.

 

DAY 4. Tiger’s Nest Excursion

After breakfast, embark on an unforgettable hike to Taktshang Monastery, better known as Tiger’s Nest. Perched at 3,120 meters (10,240 feet) above sea level, this iconic monastery clings to a sheer cliff, offering both a breathtaking view and deep spiritual significance.

Legend has it that in 746 AD, the revered Indian saint Guru Padmasambhava flew to this very spot on the back of a tigress to subdue five demons who were hindering the spread of Buddhism in Bhutan. Today, Taktshang is one of Bhutan’s holiest sites and a must-visit for pilgrims and travelers alike.

The hike to the monastery takes about 5 hours (round trip), following an ancient path lined with prayer wheels powered by a nearby river, and leading you up to this sacred perch.

After reaching the monastery, enjoy a well-deserved lunch at the cafeteria, which offers stunning views of the valley below.

In the evening, take a leisurely stroll through Paro Town. Wander among traditional wooden buildings, shop for local crafts, and savor a taste of Bhutanese cuisine at one of the local eateries, immersing yourself in the rhythm of daily life in this charming town.

Return to your hotel for a restful overnight stay, reflecting on the day’s incredible journey.

DAY 5. Farewell

All tourists, except for visitors from India, Bangladesh, and the Maldives, need a visa to enter Bhutan. Indian visitors require a permit, while nationals of Bangladesh and the Maldives are eligible for a visa on arrival.

Visitors from India are able to apply for a permit but are required to hold an Indian passport or an Indian voter ID card. For Indian nationals under the age of 18, a passport or a birth certificate can be used to enter and they must be accompanied by a legal guardian.

Nationals from Switzerland and Thailand holding diplomatic or government-official passports are eligible for a visa at their port of entry. Foreigners issued with a valid SAARC Visa Exemption Sticker do not You have the option to apply for a Bhutanese visa online by visiting the Department of Immigration website and completing the payment process digitally.

The Bhutan Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) is a mandatory fee imposed on all tourists visiting Bhutan. It is intended to contribute to the country’s sustainable development initiatives, including the preservation of culture and the environment, as well as funding free education, healthcare, and infrastructure development projects. Additionally, it helps the Kingdom manage tourism in sustainable numbers, ensuring that visitors can continue to enjoy tranquility and an intimate experience while exploring Bhutan.

Bhutan has halved its (SDF) by 50 %  in a move to encourage tourism. Effective from September 1st, visitors will now be required to pay US$100 per person per night for the duration of their stay, reduced from the previous rate of US$200 per person per night. These revised rates will remain in effect until August 31st, 2027. Children aged 5 to under 12 years will be subject to a reduced SDF of USD 50 per person per night, while the fee is waived for children below 5 years old.

For Indian nationals, the Sustainable Development Fee to enter Bhutan is set at INR 1,200 per person per night.

The Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) is waived for up to 24 hours for tourists of all nationalities visiting the border towns of Samtse, Phuentsholing, Gelephu and Samdrup Jongkhar.

The SDF is calculated on a per night basis.
